History of the day

Today, January 26, is the day when the first printed copy of the map of Russia was released.

The first map of Moscow lands was created on January 26, 1525.

The ancient Greek scientist Claudius Ptolemy compiled an extensive reference on the coordinates of various points and a textbook on mapping.
Ptolemy’s works were the pinnacle of ancient Greek cartographic knowledge.

The map of the Russian state was created after the Russian traveler Dmitriy Gerasimov’s “Writer’s Map of Russia” and it was compiled based on surveys and stories using the works of Ptolemy.

There are 248 maps in the archives of Ivan the Terrible, and during his reign, the first geodetic manual was written, “Geometry, or a book called Measurement by means of radii and compasses.”
